Percutaneous Nerve Stimulation is sacral nerve stimulation accomplished percutaneously (through the skin) to modulate the neural reflexes that influence the bladder and pelvic floor. This is a form of “electro acupuncture.”
In OAB an abnormal voiding reflex due to increased sensory input or utilization of abnormal voiding pathways occurs. Stimulation of your tibial nerve results in activation of spinal inhibitory pathways. This helps you re-localize the pelvic floor and regain capability to relax and initiate voiding.
Not all patients respond. Success rates vary between 60-85%. Pelvic floor muscle exercises and reducing acidic foods in your diet can increase the success rate to about 90%.
